Dodds & Shute are a design consultancy and specialists in procurement, who are based in Vauxhall, London. We speak to Nick Shute, the co-founder and creative director, to gain more insight into the minds of one of our frequent suppliers.
How did your interest in procurement/interior design come about?
NS. My interest in design came about from studying product design at university. When I graduated, I got a job at Conran which is where I met my business partner Stefan. We founded the business because of our love of furniture, enjoyment of the service element of the job and consulting with designers and architects. We simply see sales/procurement as the consequence of a job well done, it’s satisfying but not the reason we founded the business.
What has been your favourite project to work on so far?
NS. So far, our favourite projects have been working on Squire & Partners head offices in Brixton and the Marylebone Hotel with Michaelis Boyd and The Doyle Collection.
Really though, we enjoy any project with an interesting brief and an opportunity to develop a close relationship with the design team. It’s a very rewarding experience when we understand their style and they love our suggestions.
Do you or the company have a design motto or most loved design quote?
NS. The company mottos are “work hard and be nice to people” and “we strive to deliver unique projects without any stress”.
What are your favourite pieces of furniture/lighting at the moment?
NS. This is almost an impossible ask as I think we have really lovely collection! It’s essential we keep our portfolio up to date with the latest products and emerging talent. With that in mind I’m very excited by the new collaboration between our friend the product designer Tim Rundle and Australian design brand SP01, definitely worth checking out. Also, Jason Miller the American designer is doing some very interesting things with Portuguese manufacturer De La Espada right now, the Elliot range in particular is worth a look.
You just moved into a new workspace. You must have a few of your favourite pieces of furniture in the office, right?
NS. A few yes! We have a Swoon chair, designed by my favourite designers Space Copenhagen and manufactured by Fredericia, it’s incredibly sculptural and comfortable. We have a beautiful balancing lamp called Aida designed by Angelo Mangiarotti and made by Karakter Copenhagen. I’m also very proud of our modular sofa with an angled brass base, it is a piece we designed ourselves and was made by our fantastic upholstery partner in the Cotswolds.
It’s so important our office is full of lovely products as it is a reflection of the work we do!
What would your dream project be?
NS. We are working on some of our dream projects at the moment. They are in the development stage at the moment, so we can’t really talk about them. Some are due to be completed later in the year so watch this space!
